What: The rescue-world framework for a newly adopted dog's decompression - especially shelter/rescue dogs, but it helps any new arrival.

First 3 days: OVERWHELMED: expect hiding, not eating, shutting down or over-arousal. Minimize demands - no visitors, no big outings. A quiet space and a predictable routine. This is not their personality; it's decompression.

First 3 weeks: SETTLING IN: they learn the routine and start showing real personality (sometimes including new behavior challenges as they get comfortable). Begin gentle training and structure.

First 3 months: TRUSTING: bonded, secure, and truly themselves. The dog you met on day one is rarely the dog you have at month three - usually better.

· Keep it boring and calm - a tired dog from a gentle walk sleeps better than an over-stimulated one
· Crate near your bed for the first nights eases the transition for dog and human (see the Crate Training guide)
· Expect some night waking - normal for the first week, especially puppies and rehomed dogs
· Puppy potty reality: they physically can't hold it overnight yet - one or two calm, boring middle-of-the-night trips out

Confirm the home_setup gear is ready BEFORE arrival (crate, bed, gates, food matching what they've been eating), decide house rules as a family first, and find your emergency vet TODAY (see SOS).

Keep them on their current food at first; switch gradually over 7-10 days (see nutrition) - a stress-upset gut plus a food change is an avoidable mess.

Within the first week: a wellness baseline (which also matters for the pet-insurance pre-existing clock), microchip check and registration update, and a parasite/vaccine review.
