Fences and dog parks

Height by dog: 4 ft stops many dogs; athletic breeds (huskies, shepherds, malinois, many sporting dogs) clear 5-6 ft without effort. Add a coyote roller or angled top for climbers.

Diggers: Bury hardware cloth or lay an L-footer along the base - terriers and northern breeds solve dirt.

Gates: Self-closing hinges and a latch a dog (or a delivery driver) can't leave ajar. Most escapes are gates, not fences.

Sight lines: Solid fencing is calmer for reactive or barking dogs - the fence they can't see through is the fence they don't patrol.

Our honest position: we don't recommend them. They work by pain or startle, which is the line we don't cross - and beyond that they fail at the job: they don't keep other dogs, coyotes, or people OUT, a determined dog in high prey drive will take the correction and leave (then won't come back through it), and some dogs form fear associations with the yard itself. Physical fence, long line, or supervised leash time.

The honest take: Dog parks are wonderful for a specific dog: social, well-mannered, resilient, and matched with a supervising owner. For many others they're where behavior problems begin. You cannot control who else walks in, whether they're vaccinated, whether their owner is watching, or whether a scuffle escalates - and one bad experience can create leash reactivity that takes months to undo.

Safer alternatives: · A private rented yard (sniffspot-style services) for solo zoomies
· Walks with one known compatible dog
· Structured play at a vetted daycare
· Long-line freedom in a quiet field

If you go: · Off-peak hours, small numbers
· Leave the ball and food at home - resources cause fights
· Keep moving rather than clustering at the gate (the most common flashpoint)
· Leave early - end on a good note, before it turns
· Learn the difference between play and trouble: loose bodies, bouncy movement, and role-swapping are play; stiffness, staring, and one dog never getting a turn are not
